CAKE
TASTING
We DO NOT offer cake tasting in our wedding cake business. Why not?
1)Each cake should be unique and have a different flavour, not be exactly the same as the one beside it and the one that was baked last week.
Most cake shops do not vary in their cake flavours. Why are our cakes different? Because we do not use the standard Bakels dry cake mix powder to make our cakes that most cake shops and bakeries use – this is a mix that cheaply and effectively creates the same cake, the same flavour and the same consistency with each cake using Bakels flavour pastes. After using this dry mix for years when being employed in different commercial cake shops and bakeries I decided I did not want to have commercial tasting cakes so I use different batter mixes and flavours for my cakes. When you are able to buy 25kilo bags of dry mix to use to make commercial cakes your cakes will always turn out the same which suits large cake shops and I don’t blame them for using a standard product for the same result each time. Many people consider commercial cakes to taste "dry" or like "plastic", this is because dry mixes can have lots of artificial ingredients in and rarely use fresh eggs (which in my opinion are imperative to a gorgeous moist cake). However this is not how I wish to make my cakes so I use my own fresh ingredients including large eggs purchased every week and assorted cake batter mix ingredients to make my own flavours. So one chocolate cake I bake one week can be different to the chocolate cake I bake the week after – I am an artist and that is how I choose to make my cakes, not the same as everyone else. I am always trying to improve my flavours with lots of experimental baking!
2) I am a single cake artist working on my own most of the time, I do all of the baking myself with no help unless I am really busy with unexpected and urgent wedding cake orders, AND I have lots and lots of flavours to choose from - if I were to offer taste testing I would be forever baking cakes other than the ones I have to create for my cake art.
I already bake from early in the morning to late at night to get my orders completed on time and there is just not enough time in my day to make extras. Many times I make extra cakes if I make a full bowl of batter in one flavour and only have a small cake to make from that bowl so some lucky customers do come in for their consultations to find there is a surprise slice or two of cake to sample. I do not ever promise this however, especially in busy wedding cake season when I am working very long hours.
3) CAKE SAMPLES - I have been asked in the past to provide small cakes for tasting and I have done this without cost only to find out afterwards that the customers were dishonest and simply wanted free cake. Sorry but I am a one-man business and cannot afford to feed the world so please do not ask me to provide sample cakes, I will not do it after being taken advantage of one too many times
Many customers contact me afterwards to say how lovely and moist the flavour of the cakes were – please do check our customers comments on our website to see what they are saying!
